Massage for Cancer Survivors

As of 2022, the National Cancer Institute estimates that about 18.1 million people in the United States are cancer survivors. The effects of cancer treatment can be lifelong and require massage therapists to have an understanding of cancer and cancer treatments.
No matter where a massage therapist practices, they will encounter a client who has experienced cancer and cancer treatment. In this course students will learn the basic pathophysiology of cancer, purposes and side effects of standard biomedical cancer treatments (surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, immunotherapy, hormone therapy,) and massage adaptations for the short term, long term, and late effects of cancer treatments.
Students will learn how to accurately and consistently modulate pressure and adapt massage for lymphedema risk. Students will also learn how to perform an effective intake in any environment. The course culminates in a live client clinic where students will offer a full (60 minute) massage session to people who are in or have been through cancer treatment.
